  2. Tips

Rach Vem is a fishing village in northern Phu Quoc, also called Starfish Beach because its shallow coastal waters are home to many red starfish. The road in runs through forest, which makes getting there a small adventure.

What is at Rach Vem?

  • Red starfish beneath knee-deep, clear water.
  • Floating raft restaurants where you can choose fresh seafood for lunch.
  • Wooden jetties and boats with lovely photo angles.

Tips

  • The dry season (roughly November – April) has the clearest water.
  • Go in the morning to avoid crowds and the harsh midday sun.
  • Never lift starfish out of the water or step on them – they die easily out of the sea.
  • The last stretch is a dirt road, slippery in the rainy season; consider a car with driver.

Want starfish somewhere wilder? Take a speedboat to Ham Rong Cape – the private Starfish Beach tour includes a private car through the forest and a private speedboat from Rach Vem, or choose the open-top Jeep with a driver-photographer.

Frequently asked questions

Are there starfish at Rach Vem all year?

You can see them year-round, but the dry season (roughly November – April) has the clearest water.

Can I pick up starfish for photos?

Please don’t. Starfish die easily when lifted out of the water; photograph them where they are.

How do I get to Rach Vem?

Drive north from Grand World or Duong Dong; the final stretch is a forest road. Ride yourself, take a taxi or join a private tour with car and boat.
