At low tide a shallow, seaweed-covered sandbar appears, linking the shore to Hon Mot. You can wade out to a deserted island – an experience few visitors know about.
Contents
Hon Mot is a small island off Bai Thom in north-east Phu Quoc. At low tide the channel between shore and island becomes very shallow, revealing a strip that seems to “float” on the sea, covered in green seaweed. Locals and a few adventurous visitors wade across to the island.
The experience
- Wade along the sand and seaweed in the middle of the sea – striking from above.
- Explore a small deserted island and the eastern sea.
- A quiet spot for explorers.
Important notes
- Check the tide table beforehand; only cross at low tide and return before the water rises.
- Wear water shoes; watch out for slippery seaweed, shells and sea urchins.
- Don’t go alone or in strong wind.
- Bai Thom is far from the centre – combine it with Rach Tram fishing village.
